How to Blur Faces on Instagram (Stories, Posts and Reels)
Instagram has no face blur tool. Here is how to hide a face in a Story with what Instagram does have, and how to blur faces properly before you post a photo or Reel.
Instagram has filters, stickers and a drawing tool, but no way to blur one person's face. Its blur options all do something else: Focus mode and the portrait-style effects soften the background and keep faces sharp. So there are two routes: cover the face with what Instagram has, or blur it before you open Instagram.
Hide a face in an Instagram Story
These work in the Story editor right after you pick a photo or video.
Cover it with a sticker or emoji. Tap the sticker icon, pick an emoji or GIF and drag it over the face. Pinch to make it bigger than the head. On a video the sticker stays where you put it while the person moves. Some versions of the app let you press and hold a sticker to pin it to a moving object, but that tracking is loose: play the Story back before posting, because the face can slip out from under the sticker.
Paint over it. Tap the draw icon (squiggle), pick the marker, set the brush to its largest size and a solid colour, and paint over the face. This only works on photos; the drawing stays still while a video moves underneath.
Neither is a real blur. They are fine for a quick Story, less so for a Reel or a post that stays on your profile.
Blur a face before posting a photo
For a post or carousel, blur the photo first and upload the result.
- Open the free photo face blur in your phone's browser.
- Pick the photo. Every face is found and blurred automatically.
- Tap your own face (or anyone who should stay visible) to keep it clear. Drag a box over anything that was missed.
- Choose blur, pixelate or black box, tap Download photo, then post it on Instagram as usual.
The photo is processed inside your browser and never uploaded. If you are on iPhone, the built-in Clean Up trick in Photos also works for single photos; see how to blur faces on iPhone.
Blur faces in a Reel or video post
A moving face needs a blur that follows it. Instagram's editor cannot do that, and a pinned sticker drifts. Do it before upload:
- Open FaceBlur and upload the clip.
- Each person in the video shows up as a thumbnail. Tap the ones who should stay clear, for example yourself or the friend who agreed to be filmed.
- Play the preview, then press Blur & download under Private mode. You get an MP4 at the same resolution and frame rate, with the sound kept.
- Upload that file to Instagram as a Reel.
Private mode is free and runs on your device. Phones are slower than computers at encoding video, so for clips longer than a minute or two it is faster to do it on a laptop and send the file to your phone.
When you should blur faces on Instagram
Instagram's rules let you post people in public places, but people can report content that shares their image without consent, and children are a special case. Blurring is worth it when:
- Children who are not yours appear, for example at school events, parties or sports.
- Strangers are clearly identifiable in a video of a private moment, a conflict or anything they might not want public.
- You are reviewing a place or an incident and the people in it are not the point.
- Your own family wants privacy, for example a partner who does not post online.
Quick answers
Does Instagram have a blur tool for faces? No. Its blur effects blur the background, not a chosen face.
How do I blur my own face but not others? In FaceBlur, set your thumbnail to blur and tap everyone else to keep them clear. Any combination works.
Will Instagram lower the quality of my blurred video? Instagram compresses every upload. Exporting at the original resolution, as FaceBlur does, gives it the best file to start from.
